Navy Training Corps Courses Guide

As our Training Programme continues to expand; our aim as always is for the training to be enjoyable for the Cadets and straightforward for the Staff to deliver. We have a two tier system of Basic and Advanced Qualifications.

Below, is a list of our current courses for adults and cadets.

ADULT COURSES

Weapon Handling- this is a one day course and is a pre-requisite for staff members who wish to progress to become Range Supervisors. This course is also open to members of staff who wish to undertake Weapon Drill Training but who do not wish to undertake a Range Supervisor Course.

The course will be focused on safe weapon handling and parts of the SA80 Rifle and also Air Weapons. Successful candidates will be recommended for the Range Supervisors Course. An Annual Refresher Course will be mandatory.

Range Supervisor – this is a one day course and will cover the required safety aspects and live firing practices for .177 Air Rifles. Applicants must have successfully completed the Weapon Handling Course. Successful candidates will be authorised to conduct and supervise .177 live firing practices. A Refresher Course will be required every 3 years.

Where possible both the Initial Weapon Handling and the Range Supervisors Courses will be held over a single weekend.

Instructional Methods (IM)- this is a weekend course and is required to be undertaken by all Instructional Staff. Candidates will be required to undertake a presentation which will be assessed. The course will be a pre-requisite for staff members seeking promotion to a higher rank.

Child Protection/Safeguarding – this is a one day course and is required to be undertaken by all personnel, uniformed and civilian, every 3 years.

Senior Rates General Course – this is a weekend course and is required to be undertaken by all Senior Rates as soon as is practicable after entry into the Corps. The course is a pre requisite for promotion to a higher rank. The course is designed to enhance knowledge of the Corps, including Rules and Regulations, Dress Regulations, Corps Documentation and Training. Basic Drill Training will also be included.

Officers General Course – this is a weekend course and is required to be undertaken by all Officers as soon as practicable after entry into the Corps or on promotion from a Senior Rate. The course is a pre requisite for promotion to a higher rank. The course is designed to enhance previous knowledge of the Corps, including Rules and Regulations, Dress Regulations, Corps Documentation and Training. Basic Sword Drill Training will also be included.

Specialisations

Adult Basic Seamanship  – this is a weekend course and is an introductory Course into the Seamanship Syllabus. The course content will include the new elements of the Cadet Basic Course and will be both practical and theoretical with assessments.

The course will be suitable for Staff who just wish to gain basic seamanship skills in order to train Junior Cadets (including Bootees) or for staff who wish to progress within the Seamanship Syllabus to Instructor level. Successful candidates will be issued with an Adult Log Book.

Adult Advanced Seamanship -  this course requires two weekends training and candidates will be required to complete both weekends. Applicants will have completed the Adult Basic Course (including the previous Basic Course) or be recommended because of previous training and qualifications. The course content will include the new elements of the Cadet Advanced Course and will be both practical and theoretical with assessments.

Adult Sailmaking -  this is a weekend course for Seamanship Instructors and is designed to cover more in depth elements of sailmaking to enhance knowledge and practical ability.

Adult Basic Cook Steward-  this is a weekend course and is an Introductory Course into the Cook Steward Syllabus. The course content will include the new elements of the Cadet Basic Course and will be both practical and theoretical with assessments.

The course will be suitable for Staff who just wish to gain basic skills in order to train Junior Cadets (including Bootees) or for Staff who wish to progress within the syllabus to Instructor Level. Successful candidates will be issued with an Adult Log Book.

Adult Advanced Cook Steward – this course requires two weekends training and candidates will be required to complete both weekends. Applicants will have completed the Adult Basic Course (including the previous Basic Course) or be recommended because of previous training and qualifications. The course content will include the new elements of the Cadet Advanced Course and will be both practical and theoretical with assessments including running a Galley during a training event.

Adult Communications -  these courses will be promulgated and run by HQSO Communications as soon as the Communications syllabus is finalised.

Adult Basic Drill -  this is a weekend course and will cover Squad Drill Training and basic Weapon Drill. The course is suitable for those members of Staff who wish to undertake Squad Drill Training in order to gain knowledge to train Junior Cadets (including Bootees) or as a starter course for those staff members who wish to progress to Drill Instructor.

Adult Intermediate Drill -  this is a two weekend course which will refresh the previously taught Squad Drill and Weapon drill with assessments being undertaken for Drill Trainer or Drill Instructor. (Drill Trainer level- may be awarded to candidates who have not fully achieved the required level for Instructor Level) Candidates who reach a required level of ability may be awarded Drill Instructor.

Adult Advanced Drill -  this is a weekend course for Drill Instructors only and will cover Ceremonial elements of Drill Training including Colour Training, Sword and Cutlass and Ceremonial Guard.

Other Adult training courses which can be run either at Unit or National levels include designated Marines Training (as required by the Marine Sections Training Programmes) Piping, Boatwork Courses, Canoe and Sailing Courses and Offshore Training may be undertaken by Staff when available.

 

CADET COURSES

Basic Seamanship-   this is a one weekend course and it replaces the old 3rd Class Course. The course content will include some elements previously included in the 3rd Class syllabus plus some elements transferred from the 2nd Class syllabus, The course may be conducted at Unit or National level by authorised Seamanship Instructors and assessments will be both theoretical (or oral) and practical. Successful candidates will be awarded a Basic Seamanship Badge (former 3rd Class Badge)

Advanced Seamanship -This course requires two weekends, both of which must be attended. Applicants must have successfully completed the Basic Course (including the former 3rd Class) The course content will include some elements previously included in the 2nd Class syllabus plus some elements transferred from the 1st Class syllabus. The course may be conducted at Unit or National Level by qualified Advanced Seamanship Instructors and assessments will be both theoretical (or Oral) and practical. Successful candidates will be awarded an Advanced Seamanship Badge (former 2nd Class Badge)

Basic Cook/Steward     This is a one weekend course and it replaces the old 3rd Class Course. The course content will include practical elements which may be conducted by providing catering services to a combined training weekend course or as a sole course. The course may be conducted at Unit or National Level by authorised Cook/Steward Instructors. Successful candidates will be awarded a Basic Cook Steward badge (former 3rd Class Badge)

Advanced Cook/Steward       This course will be run over two weekends and replaces the old 2nd Class Corse. The course is currently conducted at National Level due to facilities available. The practical elements will include the provision of catering services for a training weekend or designated event. Assessments will be conducted by authorised Advanced Cook/Steward Instructors. Successful candidates will be awarded an Advanced Cook/Steward Badge (former 2nd Class Badge)

Proficiency Courses   May be conducted by authorised Instructors at Unit or National Level. These include Piping and Musical Activities, Semaphore, and Morse Code (syllabus currently being developed by HQSO Communications)

Boating (under RYA Schemes) and Canoeing (under BCU Schemes) are required to be undertaken at designated training centres by suitably qualified instructors. These courses have nationally recognised awards.

Offshore Sailing activities may only be undertaken with designated offshore vessels with assessments being conducted by the Off- Shore Supervisor.

Campcraft should be conducted to mirror the requirements for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in order to ensure that the same standards are achieved. Training and Assessments may be conducted by D of E Trainers/Assessors or authorised Marine Staff.
